is it worth investing in good watercolour brushes?

in short, it really depends what you’re doing. Professional watercolour brushes have a greater water & pigment holding capacity, & are just all round lovely to paint with, so they can improve the overall quality of your work. In saying that, I know one of my favourite watercolorists who use very cheap brushes because of the surface medium they paint on. Painting on something like aquaboard or book fore-edges, can really damage the brush hairs, so you’d be best using brushes you don’t mind replacing often. If you’re painting on paper, I do recommend investing in the best brushes possible- you will notice a difference in your work!

what is the difference between natural & synthetic hair brushes?

Simply, natural brush hairs are made from animals, & synthetic are man made. Natural brushes are generally thought to be superior by watercolorists, purely for their pigment & water holding capacity – however there any many just-as-amazing synthetic brushes on thew market now. Animals don’t need to be involved in our practice!

how can you care for watercolour brushes?

Make sure you thoroughly wash your brushes after each use. They should be left to dry either lying flat or at an angle whereby the brush hairs are lower than the ferrule. You should also store your brushes somewhere safe- you can re-apply the plastic casing that fit over the brush hairs, otherwise putting them in something like a brush roll can be a great option.
